Seven Steps To Work-at-Home Success in 2012

Posted on 02 February 2012 by The SearchLogix Group

The other day a woman said to me that her family was trying to put her off from working at home because it doesn’t exist. When I hear stories like this I don’t know whether to cry or scream. I want to cry because I’m thinking of the dream that is being snuffed out. I want to scream because people do work at home. In fact, it’s so prevalent now, you can’t go anywhere without meeting one of us. We’re your friends on Facebook, the person sitting next to you in the coffee cafe, and the owner of the business you just bought something from.

Today working at home is possible for anyone, but it’s not fast, immediate or automatic. It requires research, planning, implementation and diligence. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you can work at home in 2012.

Step One: Decide what you want. That sounds pretty easy. More money. Better house. More time. But, these are vague goals and don’t inspire action. Be clear about what you want. Be specific including what color, what size, what shape, what brand…etc. Do you want to be home with the kids every day? How much money would that take? What size and style house exactly do you want? Where is it located? On how much land? The more specific you are with your goals, the easier it is to focus on them and be inspired by them. In fact, these desires are the fuel that will keep you moving forward when a part of you wants to give up.

Glassdoor Leverages Facebook and Launches Inside Connections

Posted on 01 February 2012 by

Glassdoor is the only site that offers professional networking, job listings and reviews and salary reports in one place – and they represent more than 150,000 companies including 100% of those that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Fortune 500 and the S&P 500.  Minutes ago they announced the launch of Inside Connection.  The new product will leverage Facebook to help job seekers quickly uncover if they know someone at a company where they want to work.

I had a chance to catch up with Glassdoor to learn more about the launch of Inside Connection and Robert Hohman, co-founder and CEO shared the following:

“Friends and family are the most trusted resource for career advice, and with Glassdoor’s Inside Connections, we are bringing together who you know with what you need to know about jobs and companies. Inside Connections allows job seekers to leverage their Facebook network to uncover where they have an ‘in’ at specific companies to help them land the right job”.   said Robert Hohman, co-founder and CEO of Glassdoor. “

MN Headhunter: 2012 Minnesota Golden Gopher Football Signing Class

Posted on 01 February 2012 by Top Recruiting Blogs aggregator

It has been a long time since I posted anything about Gopher football here. Do not think that shows a lack of enthusiasm or that my support is wavering.

Quite the opposite but time has been in very short supply so while I have been attending and traveling to games my blogging has been absent.

My Tweets however have been in great supply. You can follow me on Twitter by clicking @Gophers

Today is National Signing Day for football and this evening I will be attending the University of Minnesota event at TCF Bank Stadium.

I look forward to seeing some old friends tonight and hearing from Coach Kill about this class.

Below is a press release from the athletic department on today’s announcements.

Go Gophers!!!

NOTE: The U of M athletic department has done an awesome job today. They have player bio's posted including video and I have added the link for each player below. For more information click Minnesota National Signing Day.

Kill Introduces 2012 Golden Gopher Football Signing Class

University of Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill has announced the addition of 31 student-athletes to the Golden Gopher football program.

Of the 31 student-athletes announced by Kill Wednesday, eight were already enrolled in classes at the University of Minnesota. Nineteen signed their National Letters of Intent Wednesday, while four others signed Acceptance of Admission forms.

Twenty-five members of Minnesota’s recruiting class will be true freshmen for the 2012 season, while six join the Gophers from the junior college ranks.

"The most important thing for us was to make sure we got kids that fit in here at the University of Minnesota with our system and what we expect,” Kill said. “I think we did that. And then of course we needed to improve the athleticism and speed in our football program and I think we did that too."

A wide net was cast to land the 2012 Gopher recruiting class. Thirteen states are represented in the hometowns of the newest Gopher class. Ten of the newest Gophers hail from the State of Minnesota. Texas is next on the list with four, while three come from Florida. Two each are joining the Gopher program from Wisconsin and Ohio, while there was one each from California, Delaware, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Missouri, Illinois and Alabama.

The 2012 Minnesota recruiting class is a little heavier on the defensive side of the ball, with 16 listed in defensive positions. Eleven of the signees are slated to play on the offensive side of the ball, while four are currently listed as athletes and could play on either side.

Defensive back was the most heavily-targeted position. Eight of the student-athletes announced Wednesday are penciled in for the secondary. The defensive line saw the next-biggest influx of talent with six of the new Gophers expected to play on the line of scrimmage. Minnesota signed two linebackers. On offense, three student-athletes each are listed as wide receivers and offensive linemen. The Gophers added two quarterbacks, two running backs and one tight end.

U.S. Top 10 Companies Using H-1B Visas

Posted on 01 February 2012 by MN Headhunter

During a recent Minnesota tech event I was part of a conversation on the topic of H-1B visas.

It evolved as it usually does with sides taken on if the number of visas should be increased, eliminated completely or the door open to anyone who has needed skills.

And as usual the conversation changes a bit depending on the economy.

Flash back to the 90’s and the Dot Com days and companies were begging for the cap to be increased.

Then the post Y2K and 9/11 recession happened and many arguments were made for the cap to be lowered or eliminated so U.S. workers would all have jobs.

We had the uptick from 2003 – 2007 (open the doors), the Great Recession (shut the program down) and the recovery beginning in 2010 that has led once again to a shortage of folks with IT skills.

This is a complicated issue and really depends on your industry, if an employer or worker, location, skill set, etc.

And then add in an election year and the politicians get involved which is usually a recipe for disaster and everyone is left unhappy.

Before I get sucked into a debate with myself on this topic here is an article on Computerworld The top 10 H-1B visa users in the U.S.

If this topic is of interest to you check out the article as it gives a quick update on the current politics of things.

Here is their table on Top H-1B visa approvals by company:

Cognizant 5715

Infosys 4042

Wipro 2817

Tata 1758

Larsen & Toubro 1608

Microsoft 1586

Accenture 1370

HCL America 1128

IBM 1063

Google 615

Not surprising that many, most of them are offshore outsourcing companies.
